Pagan Practices – Tattoos

As I was re-reading the Bible from the front to the back, I was trudging through Leviticus and realized that there are some gems hidden in there. I found some diamonds of wisdom in the instructional sections of that book and suddenly, I came upon this Scripture.

“You shall not make any cuts in your body for the dead nor make any tattoo marks on yourselves: I am the LORD.” (Lev. 19:28)

This commandment may seem lame to those who are “New Testament Only” people, and who view the Old Testament as having been replaced by the NT. Nothing could be further from the truth, as far as I am concerned. Jesus, Paul, Peter, James and all of the Jewish writers of the NT quoted extensively from the OT. If God had intended to do away with it and replace it, why would all of these writers waste their time looking back at the OT wisdom? The whole Bible is required reading for the Christian! There are no if, ands, or buts to it! “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever”. (Heb. 13:8)

Everywhere I look today, it seems that more and more people are being tattooed. It is like an epidemic. When the world gets tattoos, it may not raise too many eyebrows, but what is going on with the Christians? Read the verse again, and you will see there is no grey area here! Just because we tattoo the word “JESUS” large as life, does not nullify the commandment of the Lord. In the commentary in my Bible written by John McArthur, it says,

“These pagan practices were associated with Egyptian idolatry and were therefore to be avoided. The practice of making deep gashes on the face, arms or legs, in times of grief was universal among pagans. It was seen as a mark of respect for the dead, as well as a sort of offering to the gods who presided over death. The Jews learned this custom in Egypt and though weaned from it, relapsed into the old superstition. Tattoos also were connected to names of idols and were permanent signs of apostasy”

I don’t understand how we can be so dull in discernment as to justify becoming even more like the world and enter the arena of tattoo competitions! It seems so obvious that this practice is at best “dumb” and at worst, an entry point for demonic spirits! Why take the chance? These marks are clearly rebellious signs displayed before a world that laughs at our blindness and worldliness! I believe that there are evil spirits that enter the life of the one allowing the tattoo artist to cut their skin in the process of inserting ink into the human body, which is the temple of the Holy Spirit. These marks will be there until death, unless removed by a surgeon at great cost to the patient. Have you ever noticed that most people do not stop at one tattoo? They start with the first one, but it seems very quickly, the next tattoo vision enters the mind, and is soon acted upon.

When I did drugs back in my childhood days, there was a thrill the first time I drank, smoked marijuana, and took other heavier drugs that soon wore off in intensity. There was a continual, increasing desire to try and reach the first “high” which I can tell you is impossible. A friend of mine who was an alcoholic, told me that he was always trying to get the thrill of the “first time” and finally ended up in a black hole that seemed to have no exit. Thank God he had someone who reached out to him to pull him out of the darkness, while many others still flounder in the pitch black emptiness. These temporary measures never deliver what they promise! The Bible says,

“Sheol (the place of the dead) and Abaddon (the place of destruction) are never satisfied, so [the lust of] the eyes of man is never satisfied. (Prov. 27:20 Amplified Bible)

He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver, nor will he who loves abundance with gain. (Ecc. 5:10)

Is it clear that we are never satisfied in the flesh (or natural)? Only God satisfies! All of the substitutions that we attempt to implant our lives with, only bring a temporary relief from the emptiness. All of these similar desires seem to me to be synonymous with the use of drugs (either legal or illegal). Many other things can seem like they are going to ease the pain of the loneliness or emptiness, yet in the end they only enslave with a lust for more and more satisfaction. There was a time that people actually thought that watching violent entertainment would in fact soothe the need to act out those things in real life. Nothing could be further from the truth. The more you see, the more you want! I think everyone now knows that this is a trap of addiction! When is enough enough? The Bible is full of words that warn us to beware, because the flesh is NEVER SATISFIED! NOTHING will ever be ENOUGH!!!!!

Only GOD truly satisfies with peace, love, and deep joy in the Holy Ghost! The intellectualization that I hear going on with some of our brothers and sisters is just a smoke screen to evade the subject, and evade the decision to relinquish all control to the Master Jesus. Are you decreasing? Is He increasing in your life? If not, why not? If not now, when? OR are you deceiving yourself into a false sense of security, thinking, “God knows my heart, He understands my weaknesses!” This is nothing more than a spirit of vanity coming from the “most vain one”, the enemy of our souls! You have been implanted with a lie that has festered and spread into your brain like a cancer! You need to renew your mind with the mind of Christ so as to awaken your inner man to the truth of these words! Awake O sleeper! Your life is being stolen from you by satan’s tactics to destroy your effectiveness as a minister of reconciliation!!

Have you got a tattoo since becoming a Christian? Repent and turn away from this pagan practice. Are you considering getting a tattoo in the near future? Repent and turn away from this evil desire. Has this Epistle stirred up rebellion in you and increased your desire to get a tattoo or another tattoo? Well………..you’re on your own brother or sister, may God have mercy upon you! God is not sleeping as some may think! His justice is perfect! His judgments are without flaws! He is perfect! Just because He is not acting on those sins that we commit every day does not mean that He has changed His mind on these things. It is because He is full of mercy and patience! He is waiting for you and I to see the LIGHT and turn towards it! Even in Revelation it says,

‘I know your deeds, and your love and faith and service and perseverance, and that your deeds of late are greater than at first. 20 ‘But I have this against you, that you tolerate the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, and she teaches and leads My bond-servants astray so that they commit acts of immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols. 21 ‘I gave her time to repent, and she does not want to repent of her immorality. (Rev. 2:20-21)

Please note, that God was even merciful to the blatant rebellious Jezebel, but that did not change her ultimate end, because of the hardness of her heart! God offered mercy and forgiveness, but that does not mean that people will take it! The final answer of God never changes, it is perfect and holy! If a person does not repent, what else is God to do? He has to be fair and just so that all of existence will see His perfectness without imperfections! We have time, but we are never sure how much. Repent of your sins daily before the Lord so that you can remain clean in His eyes! “Fear of the Lord is the beginning of understanding!”
